Zhang Comprehensive and efficient support for XML data management is a rapidly increasing requirement for database systems. To address this requirement, DB2 Universal Databasee (UDB) now combines relational data management with native XML support. This makes DB2t a truly hybrid database management system with first-class support for both XML and relational data processing as well as the integration of the two. This paper presents the overall architecture and design aspects of native XML support in DB2 UDB and its integration with the relational data-flow engine. We describe the new XML components in DB2 UDB and show how XML processing leverages much of the infrastructure which is used for relational data.

Cost-based optimization in DB2 XML

A. Balmin T. Eliaz J. Hornibrook L. Lim G. M. Lohman D. Simmen M. Wang C. Zhang DB2 XML is a hybrid database system that combines the relational capabilities of DB2 Universal Databasee (UDB) with comprehensive native XML support. DB2 XML augments DB2t UDB with a native XML store, XML indexes, and query processing capabilities for both XQuery and SQL/XML that are integrated with those of SQL. Th...

Native XML Support in DB2 Universal Database

The major relational database systems have been providing XML support for several years, predominantly by mapping XML to existing concepts such as LOBs or (object-)relational tables. The limitations of these approaches are well known in research and industry. Thus, a forthcoming version of DB2 Universal Database® is enhanced with comprehensive native XML support. “Native“ means that XML documen...

XQuery Rewrite Optimization in IBM DB2 pureXML

In this paper, we describe XQuery compilation and rewrite optimization in DB2 pureXML, a hybrid relational and XML database management system. DB2 pureXML has been designed to scale to large collections of XML data. In such a system, effective filtering of XML documents and efficient execution of XML navigation are vital for high throughput. Hence the focus of rewrite optimization is to consoli...

Pathfinder Meets DB2 Relational XQuery Optimization Techniques

We are taking the next big step towards the goal of a purely relational XQuery implementation. The Pathfinder XQuery compiler has been enhanced by a code generator that emits SQL. This code generator targets off-the-shelf relational database systems (e.g., DB2) and turns them into efficient and scalable XQuery processors. Our approach neither depends on modifications of the database kernel, nor...

ROX: Relational Over XML

An increasing percentage of the data needed by business applications is being generated in XML format. Storing the XML in its native format will facilitate new applications that exchange business objects in XML format and query portions of XML documents using XQuery. This paper explores the feasibility of accessing natively-stored XML data through traditional SQL interfaces, called Relational O...
